Origin of kiwi in Galicia

The kiwi arrived in Galicia in 1969 thanks to the businessman José Fernández López and the engineer Carlos del Río. Its commercial production began a few years later, in the municipality of Porriño.

Its cultivation continued to expand throughout the 80s, but it remained a scarce and expensive product in supermarkets, so it was abandoned in the 90s, and replaced by Albariño vineyards.

It was around the year 2005, when kiwi cultivation began to recover in Galicia for commercial purposes.

Today, Galicia is the main producer of Spanish kiwi, around 40% of the national production.
